As I finish up another day of music therapy adventures, I can’t help but wonder who benefits the most from our sessions. I have the privilege of spending time in music therapy with many dozens of individuals of all ages, most of whom are faced 24/7 for the rest of their lives with multiple challenging issues. It is inspiring, to say the least, to see the extra effort and the optimistic attitudes my friends display when making music. Despite life circumstances that bring heart breaks and difficulties into their lives, they can hit the joyful high notes during music therapy. And that most certainly brightens my day, not to mention the impact on attitudes and outlooks of family members, teachers, and other caregivers. At least once a day someone will say something like this, “I’ve never seen her so happy,” or “He really comes to life when we remind him of music therapy in his schedule today.” Music + therapy = benefits for all concerned.
